The Brain and Spine Institute is made up of experts in the field of neuroscience in order to bring patients the best healthcare in East Tennessee for a full range of neurological diseases and disorders.
Robotic surgery is a recent advancement in laparoscopic surgery for rectal cancer and other benign colorectal related interventions. Due to the limited space in the pelvis it is difficult to perform rectal surgery with laparoscopy. Using the daVinci robotic surgery platform, our physicians are able to perform complex rectal cancer procedures with unmatched precision, dexterity and control. The da Vinci system provides excellent 3-D views of the structures in the pelvis improving the ability of the surgeon to remove cancer and preserve the nerves that control bladder and sexual function.
At the University of Tennessee Medical Center, our physicians performed the first daVinci low anterior resection for rectal cancer in East Tennessee. Nationally, only about 3 percent of rectal cancer surgeries are performed with the daVinci robot.
Surgery remains the only curative treatment for rectal cancer. Because of its location deep in the pelvis, the rectum poses many surgical challenges.
Robotic surgery is the most recent advancement in laparoscopic surgery for rectal cancer. The da Vinci robot allows our surgeons to operate at a 3-D console away from the surgical field. The procedure allows excellent 3-D views, improving the ability of the surgeon to remove the cancer and may help in preserving the nerves that control bladder and sexual function.
Becoming accredited in da Vinci robot surgery for rectal cancer requires extensive training and a rigorous process of evaluation. Nationally, only about 3 percent of rectal cancer surgeries are performed with the da Vinci. Our physicians performed the first robotically assisted resection of the rectum for cancer in East Tennessee. They have published peer reviewed articles detailing the utilization of robotics in colorectal surgery. Surgery for benign disease such as diverticulitis and rectal prolapse can also be done with the da Vinci platform.
